Altered Book Art Journal Workshop

Join us to learn how to create a beautiful art journal from a vintage or antique book.  This is upcycling at its best, many old worn books are discarded and end up being thrown away....which is sad.   However they make great art journals.

You will learn how to choose the right book and how to prepare it for your artwork.  Once the book is altered and ready we will explore creating backgrounds using collage and mixed media, such as paints, gesso, pencils etc.  We will also be making a pretty wrap for our book using vintage textiles, layering them to give a rich, soft look and binding with sari silk ribbon.  Simple stitches are used and you can add as much or as little to your cover as you wish......if you have beads and charms you wish to add just bring them along.

All materials are provided, mostly the theme will be nature/plants/birds, but you are of course welcome to bring anything you wish to add in to make it personal to you.  You may like to put photos of loved ones in your book for example.

Although we will get some pages decorated in the book we will not finish it in a day.  The idea is for the book to be cherished and worked on slowly over time, when you get that free time to just mindfully sit and create.  You will go home with the skills and knowledge to work on blank pages and to experiment and have fun.

The books all vary as they are secondhand vintage or antique.  All are sourced locally.

This workshop will run from 10.30am until 5pm-ish.  Refreshments in the form of hot and cold drinks, cake and biscuits are provided.  You will need to bring a packed lunch with you.

You are purchasing a place on the workshop/group and not a physical mail order product.

Workshop and Creative Social Group Bookings and Attendance……

 All Workshops and Creative Social Groups are to be paid for in full in advance to reserve your place. By booking a place on the workshop or group you are agreeing to the terms and conditions set out below. I will email you a confirmation of your booking.

All bookings are non-refundable. The exception to this is if there are insufficient numbers to run the workshop/group or if I am forced to cancel the workshop/groups due to myself being unwell, Covid-19 restrictions or other exceptional circumstances.  I reserve the right to do this. If this should arise, I will give as much notice as possible and you will be offered a refund or a transfer to another workshop/group date.

Workshops take a great deal of prior planning and preparation on the part of myself. Therefore, all participant cancellations forfeit their workshop/group fee. As a very small business it is extremely difficult for me to absorb these costs and keep my prices low.

At present there will be a maximum of 6 participants on each date. The minimum required to run the event will be 3. Should the minimum number not be achieved I will contact you as per above.

If you are unable to attend your booked workshop or group please contact me as soon as possible to let me know. If I can successfully resell you place then I can offer you a refund or possibly a transfer to another date. Alternatively, you may send someone else in your place but please inform me of who this will be so I can ensure they have all the necessary details.

Please do not attend if you have tested positive for Covid-19.

What’s Included…….

All materials and tools needed for the projects are provided. There may be certain projects where you would like to add in your own materials or ephemera for example and you are very welcome to bring them and use them. If you wish to bring your favourite scissors or needles etc then you may do so. Don’t forget to bring spectacles if needed for close work.

Refreshments are provided such as water, tea, coffee, cake or biscuits. Cake/biscuits may be made in a kitchen where nut products are stored and used. I will try my best to accommodate dietary requirements should you inform me of this although it may not always be possible.

The Venue and Accessibility…….

All workshops and groups take place in my cabin in the garden. It is fairly snug and cosy but comfortable with 6/8 participants.

The cabin is reached by a path down the side of the house and there are a small number of steps down the garden to reach it. Unfortunately, it is not wheelchair accessible.

I am situated on a residential road so parking must be made with consideration for neighbours. You may park on my driveway and in front of our house should there be space.

Intellectual Property…….

You agree not to reproduce, copy, duplicate to sell or resell any of the projects or part of the service.  Therefore you may not go into business by making copies of my work, the projects made on the workshops/groups or running the same workshops/groups using my ideas.  You may of course use the ideas and skills learned to create items for yourself for pleasure or gifts for friends and family.
